Some Facts About Sleepless Nights That You Don’t Know!

Do you tend to wake up at nights and stare at the ceiling or clock wondering why can’t you sleep back? Those who have a difficult time sleeping at night often wonder why this happens. Despite being tired if you fail to sleep effortlessly, then given here are certain facts about sleepless nights that you should be aware about.

 

  • An average adult needs a 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep daily to remain focused and to let his body function optimally. The sleep should be uninterrupted and do not count your afternoon nap hours in this 7-8 hours.
  • About two in every four people experience insomnia at some stage of life or the other. The condition is not related to the old age alone and people of all ages can be affected. People with old age and women are more vulnerable.
  • Sleep loss mainly affects the decision making capabilities and the patients of the chronic insomnia can face serious health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes and heart strokes etc.
  • Only 10 per cent of the individuals suffer from chronic insomnia. However, both transient and acute insomnia affects as many as 30-50% of the total population.
  • You should not indulge in exercising at least three hours before retiring to bed. The only exception is yoga that calms down your nerves and deep breathing exercises.
  • Dates, milk and bananas contain tryptophan that helps you sleep better. So taking any of these before the bed time help you sleep better.
  • Taking food high in carbohydrates like whole wheat rice or bread makes you sleep better because these foods raise the serotonin levels of the body.
  • Like Serotonin, Melatonin is also a hormone that our body produces and that regulates your sleep cycles. In case your body is not producing enough melatonin then your sleep cycles tend to get disturbed.
  • Valerian and Kava are two such herbs that help reduce the amount of time and efforts you put on to have a good night’s sleep.
  • Passion flower, Chamomile and St.John’s Wort are some of the other herbs that help reduce anxiety and hence they are considered as a natural cure for insomnia.
  • Melatonin helps you sleep better and without efforts, but you should not take melatonin if you suffer from diabetes, leukemia or have severe allergies. Apart from that, avoid taking this supplement id you take blood thinning medicines or aspirin or on any blood pressure medications.
